60 Terms Defined

Casino Glossary

Every gambling term explained in plain English — from RTP and wagering requirements to GamStop and KYC. Updated for UK players in 2026.

A

An independent third-party service that resolves disputes between players and UKGC-licensed casino operators without going to court. All UKGC licensees must use an approved ADR provider.

When a complaint cannot be resolved between a player and a casino within 8 weeks, the player can escalate to the operator's ADR provider free of charge. The ADR investigates both sides and issues a binding decision.

Common ADR providers include:

  • IBAS (Independent Betting Adjudication Service)
  • eCOGRA (also a testing lab)
  • CEDR (Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution)

The casino's terms and conditions must name their ADR provider. If you cannot find it, ask customer support. After ADR, the only remaining route is court action or reporting to the UKGC (which handles regulatory matters rather than individual disputes).

Example

After a casino refused to process a £2,000 withdrawal for 6 weeks, the player escalated to IBAS, who reviewed the case and ordered the casino to pay within 14 days.

Affordability Check

Regulation & Licensing

A regulatory requirement introduced as part of the 2023 UK Gambling White Paper, requiring casinos to assess whether a customer's gambling spending is financially sustainable. Frictionless checks trigger at £125 net loss in 30 days.

Affordability checks are being phased in from 2024–2026 as part of the UK Gambling Act reform. They come in two tiers:

Tier 1 — Frictionless checks (£125 net loss / 30 days): Casinos use open-source data (credit reference agencies, publicly available information) without asking the customer directly. These happen in the background.

Tier 2 — Enhanced checks (£500 net loss / 30 days): The casino may ask the customer to provide financial documentation such as payslips or bank statements.

The aim is to identify customers who may be gambling beyond their means without creating significant friction for the majority of players who gamble responsibly.

AML (Anti-Money Laundering)

Regulation & Licensing

Legal obligations that require UK-licensed casinos to detect and prevent the use of gambling to launder criminal proceeds. Casinos must verify customer identity, monitor unusual patterns, and report suspicious activity.

Under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, all UKGC-licensed operators must have robust AML policies. In practice, this means:

  • Verifying customer identity (KYC) before processing withdrawals
  • Conducting enhanced due diligence for high-spending customers
  • Requesting source of funds evidence when deposits or spending patterns raise concerns
  • Filing Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) with the National Crime Agency if money laundering is suspected

AML compliance is one of the most common areas where operators receive UKGC fines. Several major operators have been fined tens of millions of pounds for inadequate AML controls.

B

A mathematically optimal set of decisions (hit, stand, double down, split, or surrender) for every possible blackjack hand combination. Applied correctly, basic strategy reduces the house edge to approximately 0.4–0.6%.

Basic strategy was developed by mathematically computing the optimal play for every possible combination of player hand and dealer upcard. It is the single most impactful thing a blackjack player can do to improve their expected results.

Core rules (standard 6-deck, dealer stands on soft 17):

  • Always stand on hard 17+
  • Always split Aces and 8s
  • Never split 5s or 10s
  • Double down on 11 against dealer 2–10
  • Hit hard 12–16 against dealer 7+
  • Stand on hard 12–16 against dealer 2–6
  • Never take insurance

Where to find it: Free basic strategy charts are available online and in print. Many casinos permit them at the table.

What it won't do: Basic strategy cannot overcome the house edge entirely or predict outcomes. It simply minimises the statistical disadvantage.

A slot feature that allows players to pay a premium (typically 50–100× the base stake) to immediately access the bonus round, bypassing the base game. Restricted for under-18s in the UK; some regulators have banned it outright.

Bonus buy features are controversial from a responsible gambling perspective because they allow players to escalate their spend rapidly. In the UK:

  • Players aged 18–24 face a £5/spin stake limit on online slots
  • The UKGC has discussed restricting bonus buy features further

When evaluating a bonus buy, consider the expected value: a 100× buy for a bonus with a 50% hit frequency and average 30× payout would offer -40% expected value vs base price. The premium is rarely mathematically justified — it simply skips the wait.

C

Cashback Bonus

Bonuses & Promotions

A promotion that returns a percentage of net losses to a player over a set period. Often wagering-free (returned as real cash), making it one of the most transparent and player-friendly bonus types.

Example

10% weekly cashback: If you lose £200 during the week, you receive £20 back as real cash, usually credited on Monday.

D

Deposit Limit

Responsible Gambling

A player-set cap on how much money can be deposited into a casino account over a daily, weekly, or monthly period. Required by the UKGC — all licensed operators must offer deposit limits. Reductions take effect immediately; increases require a 24-hour waiting period.

Deposit limits are one of the most effective responsible gambling tools. Under UKGC rules:

  • You can set limits for daily, weekly, and monthly periods
  • Decreasing a limit takes effect immediately
  • Increasing a limit has a mandatory 24-hour cooling-off period before it activates
  • The casino cannot apply pressure to change or remove limits

Setting deposit limits during registration is now required at many UKGC-licensed casinos. If a casino makes it difficult to set or maintain limits, that is a regulatory concern reportable to the UKGC.

Double Down

Table Games

A blackjack move where a player doubles their original bet after seeing their first two cards, in exchange for receiving exactly one more card. Strategically valuable when the player has a strong total (especially 11) and the dealer shows a weak upcard.

Example

Dealt 6 and 5 (total 11) against dealer's 6. Basic strategy says double down — place an equal bet and receive one card. If you draw a 10, you have 21 against a likely bust dealer.

E

E-wallet

Payments & Banking

A digital wallet that stores funds for online transactions, acting as an intermediary between your bank and the casino. Common gambling e-wallets include PayPal, Skrill, and Neteller. E-wallets typically offer the fastest casino withdrawals.

E-wallets are the fastest way to transact at online casinos:

PayPal: Instant deposits; withdrawals under 12 hours at most casinos. Widely accepted, excellent consumer protection. Note: some welcome bonuses exclude PayPal deposits.

Skrill: Instant deposits; 24-hour withdrawals. A dedicated gambling wallet with low fees. Not available at all casinos.

Neteller: Similar to Skrill. Fast, reliable, widely accepted. VIP status available for high-volume users.

Advantages: Speed, privacy (your casino transactions don't appear directly on bank statements), and additional consumer protection.

Caveats: Some welcome bonuses exclude e-wallet deposits. Always check bonus terms before depositing via e-wallet to claim a promotion.

eCOGRA

Regulation & Licensing

An internationally accredited testing laboratory and ADR provider that independently audits online casino games, software, and operations. eCOGRA certification confirms games are fair and RNGs function correctly.

eCOGRA (eCommerce Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) was established in 2002 and is one of the most recognised independent testing bodies in the gambling industry. Their services include:

  • Game testing: Verifying that RNGs produce genuinely random outcomes
  • RTP verification: Confirming published Return to Player percentages are accurate
  • Operator certification: Auditing casino operations against fairness and player protection standards
  • ADR services: Resolving player-operator disputes

When you see an eCOGRA certification seal at a casino, it means games have been independently tested and the operator meets minimum standards for fair play and player protection.

The most common roulette variant in UK casinos, featuring a wheel with 37 pockets (numbers 1–36 plus a single zero). House edge is 2.7%. Preferred over American roulette because the single zero halves the house edge.

European roulette's single zero gives the house a 2.7% edge on all bets except some special rules:

La Partage rule (French Roulette variant): If the ball lands on zero, even-money bets (red/black, odd/even) receive half their stake back. This reduces the house edge to 1.35% on those bets — one of the lowest in the casino.

En Prison rule: Similar to La Partage, but the even-money bet is "imprisoned" for another spin rather than returned. Statistically equivalent to La Partage.

Best bets in roulette: Even-money bets (red/black, odd/even, 1–18/19–36) with La Partage offer the best expected value. Avoid single-number bets for sustained play — they carry the same 2.7% house edge but extreme variance.

F

Free Spins (Bonus)

Bonuses & Promotions

Promotional credits that allow a player to spin a nominated slot game without using real money. Winnings may be subject to wagering requirements and a maximum win cap. Free spins are awarded as part of welcome bonuses, reload promotions, or loyalty rewards.

Key terms to check for any free spins promotion:

  • Which game: Spins are tied to a specific slot. If you don't enjoy that game, the value is limited.
  • Spin value: Each spin has a fixed stake (commonly 10p–20p). 50 spins × 10p = £5 in game time.
  • Wagering requirement: Typically 30–40x on winnings. Wagering-free spins are most valuable.
  • Maximum win: Usually £20–£100 cap regardless of actual winnings.
  • Expiry: Spins and resulting winnings typically expire within 3–7 days.
G

GamCare

Responsible Gambling

The leading UK charity providing support, information, and counselling for people affected by problem gambling. GamCare operates the National Gambling HelpLine (0808 8020 133, free, 24/7) and offers free treatment through the National Gambling Treatment Service.

GamStop

Responsible Gambling

The UK's national online self-exclusion scheme. Registering with GamStop (free, at gamstop.co.uk) simultaneously excludes you from all UKGC-licensed online gambling websites and apps for your chosen period (6 months, 1 year, or 5 years).

GamStop is operated by GAMSTOP Ltd as an independent not-for-profit. Key facts:

  • Free to use — no charge for registration
  • Covers all UKGC-licensed operators — you do not need to contact each casino separately
  • Cannot be reversed during the chosen period
  • After expiry: 7-day mandatory cooling-off before reactivation
  • Does not cover offshore/unlicensed casinos or land-based venues

To register: gamstop.co.uk — takes around 5 minutes. You need your name, date of birth, email, and postcode.

For land-based self-exclusion, contact individual betting shops or use the Multi-Operator Self-Exclusion Scheme (MOSES) or SENSE.

H

Hard Hand

Table Games

In blackjack, any hand that either contains no Ace, or contains an Ace that must be counted as 1 to avoid busting. A hard 16 (e.g., 10 + 6) is the most statistically difficult hand in the game.

Example

Hard 15: 9 + 6 (no Ace). Also hard 15: Ace + 5 + 9, where the Ace must be 1 to avoid bust (total 15 rather than 25).

Hold and Spin

Slots & Games

A slot bonus mechanic where special symbols (usually money or coin symbols) lock in place while the remaining reels continue to spin. The feature typically lasts 3 respins, resetting each time a new qualifying symbol lands.

Example

Buffalo Hold & Spin: Landing 6+ coin symbols triggers the feature. Each new coin resets respins to 3 and adds to the total payout.

House Edge

Table Games

The mathematical advantage a casino has over players on any given game, expressed as a percentage of each bet. The complement of RTP. A game with 97% RTP has a 3% house edge.

The house edge is a long-run statistical average — it does not mean you lose 3% of every bet, but that across millions of bets, the casino retains approximately 3%.

House edge by game (approximate):

  • Blackjack (basic strategy): 0.4–0.6%
  • Video Poker (full-pay Jacks or Better): 0.5%
  • Baccarat (banker bet): 1.06%
  • European Roulette: 2.7%
  • French Roulette (La Partage): 1.35%
  • American Roulette: 5.26%
  • Slots: 2–8% (varies widely)
  • Keno: 20–40%

The house edge is how casinos maintain profitability without cheating. It is built into the mathematical structure of every game.

I

A side bet available in blackjack when the dealer shows an Ace. Insurance pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Mathematically unfavorable for most players — basic strategy says never take insurance.

Insurance costs half your original bet and pays 2:1 if the dealer has a 10-value card underneath (making blackjack). At first glance it seems like protection, but the maths doesn't work:

  • In a 6-deck shoe, ~30.7% of remaining cards are 10-value
  • Insurance pays 2:1, but the true odds would need to be 2:1 to be fair (33.3%)
  • The house edge on insurance is approximately 7.4%

Even money: If you have blackjack and the dealer shows an Ace, you may be offered "even money" (take 1:1 instead of 3:2). Mathematically identical to taking insurance — avoid it.

The only time insurance has positive expected value is if you are card counting and know the remaining deck is rich in 10-value cards.

K

KYC (Know Your Customer)

Payments & Banking

Mandatory identity verification required by UKGC-licensed casinos before processing withdrawals. Players must prove their identity, address, and sometimes source of funds to comply with UK anti-money-laundering regulations.

KYC is a legal requirement, not an optional casino policy. Documents typically required:

Identity verification:

  • Passport (most accepted), or
  • Driving licence (photo card), or
  • National identity card (for EU nationals)

Address verification:

  • Utility bill (gas, electricity, water, broadband) — must be less than 3 months old
  • Bank statement — recent, showing full name and address
  • Council tax letter or HMRC correspondence

Source of funds (for higher spending levels):

  • Payslips (last 3 months)
  • Bank statements
  • Self-employment accounts or tax return
  • Proof of pension, investment, or inheritance

Tips for faster verification:

  • Submit documents before your first withdrawal request
  • Ensure photos are clear, in focus, and show all four corners
  • Your documents must match the name and address on your casino account
L

Live Casino

Table Games

Online casino games streamed in real-time from professional studios or real casino floors, hosted by trained human dealers. Players place bets on-screen while watching a live video feed of physical cards, roulette wheels, or dice.

Live casino bridges the gap between online and land-based gambling. Key facts:

How it works: High-definition cameras capture every angle of the game. OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology reads physical game elements and converts them to data. Your bets are placed via an on-screen interface.

Popular live games: Live Blackjack, Live Roulette (European, Lightning, Speed), Live Baccarat, Live Game Shows (Crazy Time, Deal or No Deal, Monopoly Live, Mega Ball).

Key providers: Evolution Gaming dominates the market and operates most live tables at UK casinos. Others include Pragmatic Play Live, Playtech Live, and Ezugi.

Vs RNG games: Live games use physical random outcomes (real cards, real wheel) — not software algorithms. Minimum bets are usually higher (often £1–£5 vs 10p for slots). The interactive, social experience is closer to a real casino.

M

Megaways

Slots & Games

A patented slot mechanic developed by Big Time Gaming (BTG) where the number of symbols on each reel changes randomly on every spin, creating up to 117,649 ways to win. Licensed to many other developers.

Megaways slots use variable reel heights (typically 2–7 symbols per reel on a 6-reel grid). Ways to win = the product of symbol counts across all reels. With 7 symbols on each of 6 reels: 7^6 = 117,649 ways.

Key features in Megaways slots:

  • Cascading/tumbling reels: Winning symbols are removed and replaced, potentially creating chain reactions
  • Unlimited win multipliers: In free spins, multipliers increase with each cascade
  • Typically high volatility

Popular Megaways titles: Bonanza (BTG), Extra Chilli (BTG), Gonzo's Quest Megaways (RedTiger), Book of Atem Megaways, Buffalo King Megaways

Minimum Deposit

Payments & Banking

The smallest amount a player can deposit in a single transaction. Most UK casinos set minimums between £10 and £20. Welcome bonuses often require a minimum deposit to qualify (e.g., minimum £20 to claim a 100% match bonus).

Multiplier

Slots & Games

A value that multiplies a win by a set amount. Multipliers can appear in base games, free spins, or bonus rounds. In cascading reel games, multipliers often increase with each consecutive win.

Example

A 3× multiplier on a £10 win pays £30. An unlimited multiplier in a free spins round that reaches 25× on a £20 win pays £500.

N

No Deposit Bonus

Bonuses & Promotions

A bonus awarded just for registering an account, with no deposit required. Typically a small amount of bonus cash (£5–£20) or free spins. Allows players to try a casino at zero financial risk.

No deposit bonuses sound appealing but come with strict conditions:

  • High wagering: Often 40–65x — significantly harder to clear than deposit bonuses
  • Low withdrawal caps: Usually £20–£50 maximum cashout regardless of winnings
  • Short expiry: Often 3–7 days to complete wagering
  • Game restrictions: Usually limited to specific slots

How to maximise them: Target low-volatility, high-RTP slots to grind through wagering requirements. Don't expect to win life-changing sums — treat them as extended free trials.

Despite limitations, no-deposit bonuses genuinely cost you nothing. The worst outcome is you lose the bonus — your own money never touches the account.

P

Problem Gambling

Responsible Gambling

A pattern of gambling behaviour that disrupts personal, family, or vocational pursuits. Characterised by an inability to control the amount of time or money spent gambling, chasing losses, and continued gambling despite negative consequences.

Problem gambling exists on a spectrum from mild concern to severe disorder. Warning signs include:

  • Spending more than intended or can afford
  • Chasing losses (trying to win back money lost)
  • Lying to family/friends about gambling
  • Neglecting work or relationships due to gambling
  • Gambling as an escape from stress or anxiety
  • Failed attempts to cut down or stop

PGSI (Problem Gambling Severity Index): A validated 9-question clinical tool used to assess gambling harm. A score of 8+ indicates problem gambling; 3–7 suggests moderate risk.

Problem gambling is increasingly recognised as a disorder with neurological similarities to substance addiction. Free treatment is available via the NHS and GamCare.

Progressive Jackpot

Slots & Games

A jackpot that grows continuously as a percentage of every bet placed across a network of linked games or casinos, until one player wins it. Progressive jackpots can reach millions of pounds.

Progressive jackpots work by taking a small percentage (typically 1–3%) of every qualifying bet and adding it to a shared prize pool. They are either:

Standalone: The jackpot is fed only by that specific game at that specific casino. Local network: Linked across all players at one casino. Wide area/network: Linked across thousands of casinos worldwide — the largest jackpots.

Famous examples: Mega Moolah (Microgaming) — record payout £22 million; Mega Fortune (NetEnt); Age of the Gods (Playtech).

Important: The effective RTP of progressive jackpot slots is lower for regular play because a large portion of each bet feeds the jackpot rather than regular payouts. Most players will never win the jackpot.

Withdrawal terms: Always check the casino's jackpot payout policy. Some pay lump sums; others pay in instalments over months or years.

Promo Code

Bonuses & Promotions

An alphanumeric code entered during registration or deposit to activate a specific promotional offer. Often used by affiliate sites (like Gamblers Spot) to unlock exclusive deals not available directly through the casino homepage.

R

Remote Gaming Duty

Regulation & Licensing

The UK tax that licensed online casino operators pay to HMRC on their gross gambling yield (GGY — player losses). The current rate is 21%. This tax is borne by the operator; UK players pay no tax on gambling winnings.

Example

If a casino's players collectively lose £10 million in a month, the casino pays £2.1 million in Remote Gaming Duty to HMRC.

The software algorithm that generates genuinely random outcomes for every spin, card draw, or dice roll at an online casino. All UKGC-licensed casinos must use independently certified RNGs to ensure games cannot be manipulated.

Online casino RNGs are pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) — mathematical algorithms that produce sequences indistinguishable from true randomness. They generate thousands of numbers per second even when no game is being played; when you spin, the current number is mapped to a reel outcome.

Key properties of a certified RNG:

  • Unpredictability: Outcomes cannot be predicted by players or the casino
  • Independence: Each outcome is independent of previous results (no memory)
  • Uniform distribution: Each outcome has its stated mathematical probability

Certification: UKGC rules require RNGs to be tested by an approved laboratory (eCOGRA, GLI, BMM Testlabs, etc.) before a game can be deployed.

Common myth: The "gambler's fallacy" — believing a machine is "due" a win after a losing streak. Each spin is independent; past outcomes have no effect on future results.

The theoretical percentage of all wagered money a game pays back to players over an infinite number of rounds. A slot with 96% RTP returns £96 for every £100 wagered on average. The inverse of the house edge.

RTP is a long-run statistical average calculated over millions of rounds. It is not a guarantee of what any individual player will win or lose.

How it's calculated: Total amount returned to players ÷ total amount wagered × 100

Good RTP by game type:

  • Online slots: 94–97% typical; 97%+ is high
  • Blackjack (basic strategy): 99.4–99.6%
  • European Roulette: 97.3%
  • Baccarat (banker bet): 98.9%
  • American Roulette: 94.7% (avoid — the double zero reduces RTP)
  • Video Poker (full-pay Jacks or Better): 99.5%+

Variance interaction: High-RTP slots can still have high variance. A slot with 96% RTP and high volatility will pay out less frequently but in larger amounts. Low-volatility 96% RTP slots pay out more often in smaller amounts.

All UKGC-licensed casinos must publish RTPs for their games. Find it in the game information or paytable screen.

Example

Starburst has an RTP of 96.09%. For every £100 wagered across millions of spins, the game pays out approximately £96.09 on average.

S

Self-Exclusion

Responsible Gambling

A formal request to a gambling operator (or GamStop for all UK online casinos) to block access to your account for a minimum period of 6 months. Self-exclusion cannot be reversed during the chosen period, and the operator must cease all marketing to you.

Self-exclusion is available at two levels:

Single-casino self-exclusion: Contact the casino directly via live chat, email, or account settings. The exclusion must be actioned within 24 hours under UKGC rules. Also covers sister brands under the same licence.

GamStop (national): One registration excludes you from every UKGC-licensed online casino simultaneously. The most comprehensive option.

After the exclusion period ends, reactivation is not automatic — GamStop requires a 7-day cooling-off, and individual casinos must confirm reactivation is your active choice.

Marketing: After self-exclusion, a casino must remove you from all mailing lists immediately. Receiving marketing after self-exclusion is a reportable UKGC breach.

Soft Hand

Table Games

In blackjack, any hand containing an Ace counted as 11 without risking bust. A soft hand can never bust on the next card because the Ace can revert to 1 if needed.

Example

Soft 17: Ace + 6. This hand is strong and flexible — you can hit without busting. Basic strategy says hit or double soft 17 against most dealer upcards.

Source of Funds

Payments & Banking

Documentation required by casinos to prove that the money being used for gambling has been legitimately earned. Part of AML compliance. Typically requested when cumulative deposits or losses exceed certain thresholds.

Source of funds checks are increasingly common at UK casinos following UKGC pressure to improve AML controls. They are not personal — they are a legal requirement triggered by deposit or loss thresholds.

Acceptable evidence includes:

  • Payslips (most common)
  • Bank statements showing salary credits
  • P60 or P45 (employment income)
  • Tax return (self-employed)
  • Pension statements
  • Investment or dividend statements
  • Proof of inheritance with supporting documentation

How to approach them: Respond promptly with clear documents. The casino must process your pending withdrawal during the verification. Unreasonable delays beyond 5 business days should be escalated.

Split

Table Games

A blackjack move where a player with two identical-value cards separates them into two independent hands, each requiring an additional bet equal to the original. Basic strategy dictates specific situations when splitting is optimal.

Always split: Aces (even though you only get one card each) and 8s (splitting 16 into two separate 8s improves both hands).

Never split: 5s (two 5s = 10, a strong doubling hand) or 10s (20 is excellent, don't split it).

Situational splits: 2s, 3s, 6s, 7s, 9s — split against certain dealer upcards depending on exact basic strategy rules for your game variant.

Splitting Aces is particularly powerful: two starting hands of Ace + anything vs one awkward 12 (Ace + Ace counted as 2 or 12).

Sticky Bonus

Bonuses & Promotions

A bonus that cannot be withdrawn — only winnings generated from it can be cashed out. The bonus amount itself is deducted before withdrawal. Also called a non-cashable bonus.

Example

You receive a £50 sticky bonus and wager it to meet the requirement, ending with £120 in your account. You withdraw £70 (£120 minus the £50 bonus).

T

Tax on Winnings

Regulation & Licensing

Gambling winnings in the United Kingdom are completely tax-free for players. No income tax, capital gains tax, or any other tax applies to casino winnings, regardless of the amount won.

HMRC treats gambling as a recreational activity rather than a trade for the vast majority of players. This means:

  • No tax on slot winnings
  • No tax on sports betting profits
  • No tax on poker tournament winnings
  • No tax on progressive jackpots

The only theoretical exception is if someone operates gambling as a genuine business/profession (extremely rare and rarely enforced for recreational players). For virtually all UK players, all gambling winnings are completely tax-free.

The casino operators pay Remote Gaming Duty (21%) to HMRC — this cost is absorbed by the operator, not passed on directly to players.

U

UKGC (UK Gambling Commission)

Regulation & Licensing

The statutory regulator for all commercial gambling in Great Britain, established under the Gambling Act 2005. The UKGC issues operating licences, enforces compliance, and protects players and vulnerable adults.

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is widely considered one of the most rigorous gambling regulators in the world. Key functions include:

  • Issuing and revoking operator licences
  • Setting technical standards for games and RNGs
  • Enforcing responsible gambling requirements
  • Investigating and fining operators for regulatory failures
  • Publishing the LCCP (Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice)
  • Maintaining public registers of licensed operators
  • Overseeing the GamStop national self-exclusion scheme

Between 2019 and 2024, the UKGC issued over £400 million in fines to operators who breached its rules. High-profile cases have involved failures in AML controls, inadequate responsible gambling measures, and allowing self-excluded customers to gamble.

You can verify any casino's licence at gamblingcommission.gov.uk/public-register.

Example

In 2023, a major online operator was fined £19.2 million by the UKGC for social responsibility and AML failures.

V

Describes how a slot distributes its payouts — the balance between win frequency and win size. Low variance means frequent small wins; high variance means rare but potentially large wins. Also called volatility.

Variance and RTP are separate metrics:

  • RTP tells you how much a game pays back overall
  • Variance tells you how it pays — frequently in small amounts, or rarely in large amounts

Low variance: Frequent wins keep your balance relatively stable. Good for bonus wagering and limited bankrolls. Example: Starburst, Blood Suckers.

Medium variance: A balance of frequency and size. The most popular category for casual players. Example: Book of Dead, Gonzo's Quest.

High variance: Long losing streaks punctuated by potentially massive wins. Requires a larger bankroll to ride out dry spells. Example: Dead or Alive 2, Money Train series.

Matching variance to your goals:

  • Completing wagering requirements: Low-medium variance
  • Chasing large wins: High variance (but ensure your bankroll can sustain it)
  • Entertainment/casual play: Medium variance

VIP Programme

Bonuses & Promotions

A tiered loyalty scheme that rewards regular players with points, cash, and exclusive perks based on their betting activity. Benefits typically include dedicated account managers, faster withdrawals, higher limits, and personalised bonuses.

VIP programmes are common at online casinos but come with important caveats. Under UKGC rules:

  • Casinos must conduct enhanced monitoring of VIP customers for signs of problem gambling
  • Affordability checks are required at higher spend levels
  • Operators cannot apply VIP perks in a way that encourages excessive gambling

Warning signs of a problematic VIP scheme: being contacted by a host after a large losing session offering bonuses to continue; being offered credit; invitations to deposit more to maintain tier status.

The most player-friendly VIP programmes reward organic play with genuine value (cashback, faster withdrawals). The most harmful ones use personal contact to encourage increased spend.

W

Wagering Requirement

Bonuses & Promotions

The number of times a bonus (and sometimes deposit) must be wagered before any winnings can be withdrawn. The most important number in any bonus offer.

Wagering requirements are the primary way casinos ensure bonuses are not simply withdrawn immediately.

Calculation: Bonus amount × wagering multiplier = total bets required

  • £100 bonus × 30x = £3,000 total bets needed before withdrawal

Game contributions: Not all games count equally. Slots typically count 100%; table games often count 10–20% or are excluded entirely. A blackjack bet counting at 10% means you need 10× more play to clear the same wagering.

What's fair?

  • Under 20x: Excellent
  • 20–35x: Reasonable
  • 35–50x: High — read carefully
  • 50x+: Avoid unless you fully understand the terms

Wagering-free bonuses: All winnings are immediately real cash. The most player-friendly type. Look for "no wagering" or "wager-free" in the terms.

Example

£100 bonus with 35x wagering = £3,500 in bets required before any withdrawal. At £1/spin on slots, that's 3,500 spins.

Welcome Bonus

Bonuses & Promotions

A promotional offer for new players, typically matching a first deposit by a percentage up to a maximum amount, often combined with free spins. The most common format is 100% up to £100 + 50 free spins.

Welcome bonuses are one-time offers — you can only claim them on your first deposit at a new casino. Key things to check before claiming:

  1. Wagering requirement: How many times must the bonus be wagered?
  2. Game contributions: Do your preferred games count toward wagering?
  3. Minimum deposit: What deposit qualifies for the bonus?
  4. Maximum bonus: What is the most you can receive?
  5. Expiry: How long do you have to complete wagering?
  6. Payment method exclusions: Some bonuses are not available if you deposit via PayPal or certain e-wallets.

Always read the full terms before depositing. Our casino reviews include a plain-English summary of every welcome bonus we cover.
