Poker Variants Explained: Texas Hold'em, Omaha and More

Texas Hold'em dominates online poker, but knowing the differences between major variants will make you a more complete player and open up new game options.

Poker is not a single game — it's a family of games, each with its own rules, strategy, and character. Texas Hold'em is the dominant form thanks to its prominence in televised tournaments and online platforms, but Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, and a range of other variants all have devoted followings. Here's a guide to the main ones and what distinguishes them.

Texas Hold'em: The Foundation

Texas Hold'em is almost certainly the version of poker you know. Two cards dealt face-down to each player (hole cards), followed by five community cards dealt in three stages: the Flop (three cards), the Turn (one card), and the River (one card). Players make the best five-card hand using any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards.

The betting rounds — preflop, post-flop, post-turn, post-river — are where strategy lives. Position (where you sit relative to the dealer button) is critical. Acting last on every post-flop street gives you a significant informational advantage.

Texas Hold'em is available in three main formats:

FormatBetting StructureKey Characteristic
No-LimitAny amount up to your stackMost common, highest variance
Pot-LimitMaximum bet equals current potLess common in Hold'em
Fixed-LimitBets are capped at fixed incrementsMore predictable, less popular online

No-Limit Texas Hold'em (NLHE) is what you see in the World Series of Poker and on virtually every major online poker site available to UK players.

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO)

Omaha is the second most popular poker variant and it's significantly different from Hold'em in one key way: each player receives four hole cards instead of two. However — and this is crucial — you must use exactly two of your four hole cards and exactly three of the five community cards to make your hand.

This "must use two" rule changes the game profoundly. Hands are stronger on average in Omaha because players have more combinations available. Flushes and full houses are common at showdown, whereas they're relative rarities in Hold'em. This affects hand valuations significantly — a top two-pair might be a strong hand in Hold'em; in Omaha it's often vulnerable.

Pot-Limit Omaha (PLO) is the standard format. Maximum bets are capped at the current pot size, which limits some of the swings compared to no-limit, though PLO is still a high-variance game.

PLO Hi/Lo (also written PLO8) splits the pot between the best high hand and the best low hand (qualifying low hand must be 8-low or better). This adds another layer of complexity and is popular among experienced players.

Seven-Card Stud

Before Hold'em's ascent, Seven-Card Stud was the dominant poker form in the USA and Europe. There are no community cards. Each player receives their own seven cards — three face down, four face up — and must make their best five-card hand from those seven.

The face-up cards give everyone at the table information about what others might be holding, making memory and observation core skills. Betting rounds are numerous (one per card dealt from third to seventh street), and the game has a different, slower rhythm than Hold'em.

Stud is available on some online platforms but is much less prevalent than Hold'em or Omaha.

Casino Poker Variants (Player vs Dealer)

The variants above are player-vs-player games. UK online casinos also offer several poker-based games played against the house:

Casino Hold'em — Based on Texas Hold'em. You and the dealer both use five community cards plus your two hole cards. You decide whether to call or fold after seeing the flop. No player competition, just you against the dealer's hand. House edge approximately 2.2%.

Three Card Poker — Simple variant with only three cards dealt to each player. Two separate bets: Ante/Play (beat the dealer) and Pair Plus (bet on your hand quality). Fast pace, low complexity, house edge around 3.4% on the Ante bet.

Ultimate Texas Hold'em — More complex casino variant where you can place larger raises preflop, on the flop, or on the turn, but only on more specific decision points. Favoured by experienced Hold'em players.

Online Poker vs Casino Poker

These are fundamentally different experiences. Player-vs-player online poker (on dedicated poker platforms like PokerStars, 888poker, or partypoker, all licenced by the UKGC) involves real skill, bankroll management, and competition against other human players. Your edge comes from making better decisions than your opponents.

Casino poker games (Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker, etc.) are player-vs-house. They're simpler and more casual, with a fixed house edge like any other casino game. There's no long-term skill edge to develop.

For UK players interested in the competitive game, the dedicated poker platforms are the right destination. For players who want poker-flavoured casino entertainment without learning full poker strategy, live casino poker games are a solid option.

Bottom Line

Texas Hold'em is the natural starting point for any new poker player, and No-Limit Hold'em remains the most widely available format online. Pot-Limit Omaha offers a more complex, higher-action alternative once you've got Hold'em fundamentals down. Casino poker variants like Casino Hold'em give you poker mechanics without the player competition if that's more your style. Whichever format you choose, you'll find it at UKGC-licenced platforms with proper regulatory protections in place.
