How to Play Baccarat: Rules and Strategy for Beginners
Baccarat looks complicated from the outside, but it's one of the simplest card games in any casino — and the Banker bet offers a surprisingly low house edge.

Baccarat has a reputation as a high-roller game, immortalised in James Bond films and reserved for VIP rooms. In reality, online baccarat is one of the most beginner-friendly casino games available — there are only three bets, you don't make any decisions about the cards, and the house edge is among the lowest you'll find. Here's everything you need to know.
How a Round of Baccarat Works
Each baccarat round involves two hands: the Player and the Banker. Despite the names, you're not "playing" as the Player — you're betting on which hand will be closer to a total of 9 at the end of the round.
Before any cards are dealt, you place your bet on Player, Banker, or Tie. The dealer then deals two cards to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand. Cards are totalled, and the hand closest to 9 wins. If both hands have the same total, the Tie bet wins.
Card values work as follows: Aces count as 1, number cards at face value, and all 10s and picture cards count as 0. If a hand total exceeds 9, only the second digit counts — so a hand of 7 + 8 = 15 becomes 5.
| Card | Value |
|---|---|
| Ace | 1 |
| 2–9 | Face value |
| 10, J, Q, K | 0 |
The Third Card Rules
The part that confuses beginners is the automatic third card rule. Neither you nor the dealer makes a decision here — the rules are fixed and the software or dealer handles it automatically:
- Player hand draws a third card if its total is 0–5. It stands on 6 or 7.
- Banker hand has a more complex drawing rule based on the Banker's current total and what the Player drew. In practice, this is handled automatically — you don't need to memorise it.
Natural 8 or 9 on the initial two cards means no further cards are drawn for either side.
The Three Bets: Which Should You Choose?
Banker — This is statistically the best bet in baccarat. The Banker hand wins slightly more often due to the drawing rules. Casinos account for this by charging a 5% commission on Banker wins. Even after the commission, the house edge on Banker is only around 1.06%.
Player — No commission, house edge of approximately 1.24%. Marginally worse than Banker, but still excellent value.
Tie — Pays 8:1 or 9:1 depending on the table. Looks attractive, but the house edge ranges from 4.8% to 14.4% depending on the pay-out. This is best avoided in terms of pure value, though it's a valid entertainment choice if you enjoy the occasional long-shot bet.
| Bet | Payout | House Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Banker | 1:1 (minus 5% commission) | ~1.06% |
| Player | 1:1 | ~1.24% |
| Tie | 8:1 or 9:1 | ~4.8–14.4% |
Baccarat Strategy: What Actually Works
Because you make only one decision (where to bet), there's no complex strategy to learn. The mathematically correct approach is simple: always bet Banker. It wins approximately 51% of the time before commission and offers the lowest house edge of any standard casino bet outside of blackjack with perfect strategy.
Betting systems like Martingale or Fibonacci are often discussed in baccarat circles, but they don't change the underlying odds. They affect your session variance — how your bankroll swings up and down — but not your long-term expected outcome.
What many experienced baccarat players do is manage their bankroll with a session loss limit and a win target, then leave when one is reached. This is sound practice for any negative expected value game.
Baccarat Variants You'll Find at UK Casinos
Mini Baccarat is the same game on a smaller table with lower minimum bets — ideal for casual play.
Speed Baccarat (live) runs faster rounds for players who prefer action over atmosphere.
Lightning Baccarat (Evolution) adds random multipliers up to 512x to randomly selected cards, dramatically increasing potential payouts and variance.
Squeeze Baccarat allows the dealer to slowly reveal cards for theatrical tension — popular in live casino lobbies.
Bottom Line
Baccarat is genuinely one of the easiest casino games to play and one of the best in terms of house edge. Bet Banker consistently, avoid the Tie bet as a regular strategy, and don't be put off by the third card rules — they're handled automatically. For UK players looking for a low house-edge game that doesn't require learning complex strategy, baccarat is an excellent choice.
